About independent advocacy
Independent advocacy is when someone helps another person to share their personal needs and understand their rights.
An independent advocate can help you:
- Understand your rights - what you are allowed to ask for or do
- Get information about your care or support
- Understand that information
- Say what you think before, during, and after a support assessment
- Speak up if you are worried about your care or support
- Be more involved in decisions if your care or support is being looked at or changed
An independent advocate is on your side.
They do not give advice or make decisions for you.
They help you make your own choices and speak for yourself.
