Low Emission Zone Support Fund: how to apply
This fund helps households and small businesses near a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) scrap a polluting vehicle and switch to cleaner travel, with grants of up to £3,000.
Eligibility: householders
To be eligible, you must:
- live within 40km of a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in Scotland
- own a vehicle that does not meet LEZ standards and is not declared off the road (SORN) - use the vehicle checker to confirm
- have owned the vehicle for at least 12 months
- have no outstanding finance on the vehicle
- receive one of the following benefits:
- Adult disability payment
- Attendance allowance
- Carer's allowance
- Child disability payment
- Child tax credit
- Council tax benefit (excluding the 25% single person discount)
- Disability living allowance
- Employment and support allowance
- Housing benefit
- Income-based jobseeker's allowance
- Income support
- Pension credit
- Personal independence payment
- Universal credit
- Working tax credit
You can only claim for one vehicle per property.
Travel Better Fund: households
If your scrapping application is successful, you may also be able to claim towards greener travel options.
Each adult in your household can claim up to £500. A household can claim a maximum of two adults (up to £1,000 in total). Alternatively, the full £1,000 can be used towards a cargo or adapted bike, including electric options.
Do not buy anything until you have received and accepted a grant offer letter from Energy Saving Trust. Purchases made before receiving your offer letter will not be funded.
What you can claim for:
- a new or second-hand bike, cargo bike or adapted cycle (including electric versions) - must be bought from a bike shop; one per applicant
- bike repairs, servicing or maintenance (up to £100) – must be done at a bike shop; you will need an invoice as proof
- cycling equipment (up to £150): helmet, high-visibility jacket or vest, bike lock, mirrors, front and rear lights
- car club membership and driving credits - must be with a club operating near one of the four LEZs
- city bike hire membership and credits - must be with a scheme running near one of the four LEZs
- pre-paid bus or rail tickets for multiple journeys (such as a season ticket or monthly pass) – must cover services near one of the four LEZs
What you cannot claim for:
- cars, mopeds, motorbikes or any other motorised vehicle
- electric scooters, scooters, skateboards or hoverboards
- flights, ferries or taxis
- single, day or weekly public transport tickets
- anything bought through a private sale, online marketplace or auction
