Low Emission Zone Support Fund: how to apply

This fund helps households and small businesses near a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) scrap a polluting vehicle and switch to cleaner travel, with grants of up to £3,000.

Overview

Low Emission Zones (LEZ) are areas where vehicles must meet minimum exhaust emission standards. They aim to reduce harmful pollution and protect health. Owners of older, more polluting vehicles that do not meet these standards face a penalty charge if the vehicle is driven inside the zone . Scotland has four LEZs, in the city centres of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dunde.

The Low Emission Zone Support Fund helps households and small businesses adjust to these zones. If you scrap a vehicle that does not meet LEZ standards, you may be eligible for a cash grant - and additional support to help you switch to greener travel.

Households on means-tested benefits within 40km of an LEZ can receive up to £3,000:

  • £2,000 to scrap a non-compliant vehicle at an approved facility
  • on top of this, up to £500 per adult in your household (maximum £1,000) through the Travel Better grant

Small businesses and sole traders with an operating site within 40km of an LEZ can receive up to £3,000:

  • £2,000 to scrap a non-compliant vehicle at an approved facility
  • on top of this, if eligible, up to £1,000 towards a cargo or electric cargo bike

Funding is limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The scheme is administered on our behalf by the Energy Saving Trust.
