Labour Market Trends: August 2026

Trends in Labour Market indicators from HMRC PAYE RTI, Claimant count, and ONS Labour Force Survey data covering Scotland and the UK.

Summary of labour market statistics

Employment, unemployment and economic inactivity estimates are presented for April to June 2026, compared with the year before (April to June 2025) and the quarter before (January to March 2026).

Data is obtained from a sample survey and is therefore subject to some error. Changes over the quarter and year have been included within the commentary of this publication but caution in their use is advised by ONS due to the increased volatility in the Labour Force Survey (LFS) estimates.

Due to an LFS operational issue, the March to May 2026 and April to June 2026 estimates are subject to greater imputation. Please see supporting notes in the About this publication section for more information. Alongside the ONS labour market statistics release in July 2026, ONS published an article on LFS quality which includes analysis to date on the impact of the LFS operational issue.

The latest ONS Labour Force Survey estimates show that there was a statistically significant change over the year in the headline unemployment rate for Scotland. There are no other statistically significant changes over the year or quarter in the headline labour market rate estimates for Scotland when considering the confidence intervals around the estimates. Given concerns around the volatility in the estimates and greater imputation as a result of the known operational issue, it is not possible to determine if this reflects a genuine change in the unemployment rate and therefore should be interpreted with caution.
