Inclusive communication toolkit

This toolkit provides practical support to make communication between people and services more inclusive.


Module 5: How individual staff can implement inclusive communication good practice

This module is for everyone working in the public sector in Scotland. 

It is relevant if your job involves communicating with service users, colleagues and others. It is also relevant if you produce material like websites, social media, signage, posters, leaflets and forms.

This module describes how to implement inclusive communication good practice standards 6 to 9. These Standards detail what individual staff do to communicate in an inclusive way. They ask staff to do the following:

  • Standard 6: recognise that every group and community includes people with diverse communication needs and preferences
  • Standard 7: find out about communication needs and preferences
  • Standard 8: act on these needs and preferences
  • Standard 9: check and improve communication

Module content

This module includes:

  • a 42 minute presentation, including quotes from people who experience communication exclusion, and experts in the field
  • transcript of the presentation
  • step-by-step guide – How individual staff can implement inclusive communication good practice
  • individual staff inclusive communication good practice - assessment checklist
  • quick inclusive communication good practice guide incorporating
    • a short inclusive speaking guide
    • a short inclusive writing guide
  • practical resources list 

All materials use inclusive writing and are screen-readable. The presentation includes BSL interpretation, a voiceover and subtitles.

How to use this module

You can watch the presentation and read the step-by-step guide at your own pace, alone or with colleagues. The material can be used for group training. 

Actions:

  1. Watch the presentation and download material. You can print hard copies if you wish.
  2. Implement the steps set out in the step by step guide.
  3. Recognise and record success and progress for your own records.
  4. Continue collaboration with colleagues to share developments.
