Disposal of spent hens: options evaluation
In 2023, Scotland produce around 1.5 billion eggs from a hen population of just over 5 million, representing around 12.5% of total UK output. This means that around 4.8 million hens are slaughtered each year for the purpose of exports, food service markets and pet food.
RSPCA Feedback
39. The RSPCA confirmed at the time of report writing that there was no plan to change the current standards on journey times. It had neither investigated nor consulted on such a reduction to 4 hours. In terms of process, the RSPCA would undertake a consultation with industry before any changes to the standards are being considered. This would include an assessment linked to the ability of the industry to comply with any potential modification. No change in transport time is scheduled for the next update due to be released in August 2024.
40. The RSPCA is aware of the typical journey times for spent hens located in Northeast Scotland. The current approach provides an exception for those producers who are not able to comply with the 8 hour time limit. These producers must fulfil additional requirements making sure the birds have an appropriate end of life so they can remain part of the scheme while longer term solutions are sought.
41. The RSPCA emphasised that it prefers to work closely with producers to keep them in membership rather than having the birds sent to abattoirs that are not RSPCA approved. It was noted that there are differences with the time allowed for the transport of spent hens (8 hours) and broilers (4 hours). End of life transport for spent hens should not exceed 8 hours, barring exceptions, but this time only starts when the last hen is loaded and finishes when the lorry reaches the abattoir. Catching and loading times are not included as this can be stressful for birds and should not be rushed. It was highlighted that there are other areas in the UK with similar challenges.
42. The RSPCA would prefer those with concerns to contact them directly and all producers already have their contact details. Producers can also contact the RSPCA Farm Animal Department for technical questions or RSPCA Assured for any membership related issues.
