Disposal of spent hens: options evaluation

In 2023, Scotland produce around 1.5 billion eggs from a hen population of just over 5 million, representing around 12.5% of total UK output. This means that around 4.8 million hens are slaughtered each year for the purpose of exports, food service markets and pet food.

Key Focus of Research

7. The format of the research includes a consultation with key sector businesses and organisations, i.e.:

  • Producers
  • Abattoirs
  • RSPCA and other key organisations

8. In addition an assessment is made on the commercial feasibility and cost of establishing a purpose built abattoir facility in Scotland and to consider potential added value options, in which four alternatives are explored.

9. A literature review is added to capture any wider lessons of benefit to the Scottish sector.

10. Finally, investment options are considered taking into account the level of interest and current trading conditions faced by the sector and its ability to support such new ventures.
