Energy Statistics for Scotland - Q1 2026
Overview of key facts and trends relating to energy in Scotland for Q1 2026.
Road Transport Fuel Consumption
The latest fuel consumption figures for road vehicles in Scotland (Figure 7) show that the total estimated fuel consumption in 2024 was 40,632 GWh. This is a 0.5% decrease compared to the estimated 40,830 GWh consumed in 2023 and a 1.2% decrease compared to the 2005-2007 baseline.
The entire fuel consumption by road vehicles timeseries is revised each year to take account of methodological improvements, as well as revisions to underlying datasets. The main revisions this year include:
- Use of actual automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) data for 2023 which was not available for last year’s publication;
- An increase in natural gas consumption in 2023 due to updated DUKES data;
- A decrease in petrol light goods vehicles consumption, and a proportionate increase in diesel light goods vehicles consumption since 2015, due to using a new source of data for the petrol/diesel activity proportions.
