Culture sector support needs survey

This report summarises the responses to an online survey that was aimed at those working across or with an interest in the culture sector. It captures their experiences of, and views on, current support provision for culture in Scotland.

Footnotes

1 Not everyone who selected that they were an ‘individual’ was responding as a freelancer or someone who is self-employed. Some ‘individuals’ went on to share their views on the organisation they work for.

2 For the purpose of this survey, questions on public, private and third sector sources of funding have been separated into different questions. However, funding sources are often interlinked and crossover in the culture sector reflecting the mixture of individual and organisational activity, some of which is commercial and some is publicly subsidised.

3 To note, there was a relatively large proportion of respondents who selected ‘neutral’ for these statements ranging from 19% to 38%.

4 Due to small sample sizes for some sub-groups (e.g. different providers of support, see Table 27 and Table 28) it is not possible to report on all of these variations.

5 Due to small sample sizes for some sub-groups of organisation (e.g. number of paid staff members or annual turnover, see Tables 11 -14) it is not possible to report on all of these variations.

9 Latest data for the sector show that it employed 155,000 people in 2022. Therefore, the response rate to this survey only reflects a very small proportion of the arts, culture and creative industries workforce: People Working in Arts, Culture and Creative Industries | National Performance Framework
