Writing a Good Food Nation plan: a brief guide for relevant authorities

The Good Food Nation (Scotland) Act 2022 places a duty on Scottish Ministers and relevant authorities to produce Good Food Nation plans. This guide is intended to give an overview of the steps that relevant authorities should follow when writing these plans.

Main consultation and publication process

Step 1

Relevant authority drafts Good Food Nation Plan

Relevant authority must have regard to the national Good Food Nation Pan when drafting this

Step 2

Relevant authority holds a public consultation on the draft of their Plan

Step 3

Relevant authority publishes a final version of their Plan

Reporting Process

Reporting Period

This period lasts two years from the date of publication of the relevant authority Good Food Nation Plan (step 3 above) and every subsequent period of two years after that*.

Progress Report

As soon as practicable after the end of each reporting period, relevant authorities must publish a Good Food Nation Plan Progress Report.

Review and Revision Process

Review

Review Good Food Nation Plan Before the end of the period lasting 5 years from the date of publication, and each subsequent period of 5 years*.

Decide

Decide whether to revise Good Food Nation Plan When deciding whether or not to revise the Plan the relevant authority must have regard to any recommendations made by the Scottish Food Commission.

Repeat

If revising Plan, repeat steps 1 and 2

Publish

Publish revised Good Food Nation Plan

* The two year reporting period and five year review period repeat and do not reset with the publication of a revised Plan: the dates are always calculated from the date the relevant authority published their first Good Food Nation Plan.
