Just Transition: draft plan for transport in Scotland: easy read

This easy read version of the draft plan identifies the key challenges and opportunities that the transport sector faces in making a just transition to net zero. We are seeking views as part of a public consultation, which will run until 19 May 2025.

Businesses and Organisations

What do we want to do for businesses and organisations?

It is important that companies can change all their cars and vans to electric. It is important that this can be done in a way that is not too expensive.

Another challenge is helping companies with bigger vehicles like lorries and buses move to cleaner vehicles.

As the transport system becomes more environmentally friendly, we want to make sure that companies of all sizes in the transport sector can still be successful.

We also want to make sure that Scotland and its businesses become well known for their environmentally friendly transport.

What are the issues?

Businesses can have lots of vehicles. It will be very important to make sure that they can move to electric cars and vans easily.

Another big challenge is making sure companies can change their heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) like lorries over to cleaner fuel. This can be expensive and can take a long time.

Companies that use HDVs are often small businesses. Small businesses find it harder to buy replacement lorries.

The Scottish Government is looking at which kinds of businesses need the most support to help them move over to electric vehicles.

What are we doing to fix these issues?

The Scottish Government will work with businesses to take climate action and help the economy to be bigger.

One of the main things we are doing is helping companies pay for electric vehicles in a way they can afford.

We have provided £16 million though a fund to help install electric vehicle chargers at homes and workplaces.

We have created a fund to help businesses in low emission zones. Business owners can use this to help change their vehicle to be more environmentally friendly.

Our low carbon transport scheme helps poorer households, households in rural and island areas, and taxi drivers to buy electric vehicles.

We are helping businesses change to environmentally friendly vehicles. We are making it cheaper for councils to buy electric cars, vans, buses and trucks.
