Just Transition: draft plan for transport in Scotland: easy read
This easy read version of the draft plan identifies the key challenges and opportunities that the transport sector faces in making a just transition to net zero. We are seeking views as part of a public consultation, which will run until 19 May 2025.
Workers
What do we want to do for workers?
Many jobs in the future transport system will change. We must have new and good jobs in transport. The people who work in these jobs will need the right skills to do these jobs.

We want to make sure that people working in transport are treated fairly. We want people of all backgrounds to be able to find good, well-paid jobs in transport.

What are the issues?
We will make lots of changes to the transport system to make it more environmentally friendly. This means that lots of workers will need to learn new skills, especially people who work on vehicles.

This includes cars and vans, but also larger vehicles like lorries and buses that will be electric in the future.

There are also lots of jobs in transport that need to be filled in the future. Lots of older workers will retire in the next few years. Most people in the transport workforce are men.

This means we need to make sure that people from lots of different backgrounds and genders are getting good jobs in transport.

What are we doing to fix these issues?
The Scottish Government are already making sure that people can learn the skills they need. This includes learning how to repair electric vehicles.

There has been lots of work done to make sure that colleges have the right courses. People can learn how to repair environmentally friendly vehicles.

We also want to make sure that across Scotland, more people (especially women and girls) can do science and technology courses in school, college or university.

We want to make sure that companies working in transport are helping people of different backgrounds get jobs. Companies also need to make sure their workers have the right skills for the future.
