Stakeholder engagement report: An assessment of potential options for improved management of end-of-life fishing and aquaculture gear

A report on the feasibility of potential options for improved collection and management of end-of-life gear, based on information gathered from an industry engagement project.

Aim

The aim of this stakeholder engagement exercise was to inform policy development relating to improved mechanisms to deal with end-of-life fishing and aquaculture gear. Significant volumes of plastic end-of-life gear are generated every year in Scotland by these industries. However, at present there is no established widespread procedure for collecting this gear by industry, and there is no large-scale route for processing and recycling these materials within Scotland. A small proportion does currently get recycled but often this is a result of being sent to recycling facilities outwith the UK.
