Social Impacts Research for Marine Protected Areas and Priority Marine Features Management in Scottish Waters
This research informs the SEIA by improving understanding of the social values of coastal and island communities and how proposed marine management measures may affect them. It identifies community perceptions, potential social impacts, and key issues and concerns.

Unless stated otherwise, all the information below is based only on the data of those who completed the survey. This number excludes the final question which was not compulsory. These figures take into account respondents in hard copy and online, thus including those who attended the events and agreed to feel the questionnaire and those who were invited to do so because they could not attend. The link the survey was shared on social media during the event in Lerwick and after, which may have led to the high response rate for this location.

Demographics
Age split of respondents (for completed surveys)
The main age group replying to the survey, online and in written version, were respondents between the ages of 35 and 54, complying with 46.4% of respondents. As can be seen in Figure 4,there were 22 respondents between ages 16-24 (10.7%), 36 between ages 25-34 (17.6%), 50 between ages 35-44 (24.4%), 45 between ages 45-54 (22%), 28 between ages 55-65 (13.7%) and 24 over the age of 65 (11.7%).
The gender split of respondents (for completed surveys)
Corresponding to the attendance in the events in all the locations, respondents to the survey were predominantly male. There were 142 male respondents (69.3%), 51 female respondents (24.9%) and 12 respondents who did not disclose (5.9%).
Predominant occupations
Only four respondents (2%) out of those who completed the survey stated that they do not know people who work in fishing-related activities or industries (such as fishing, processing marine products etc.). That is, 197 respondents or 98% do personally know people who are part of the fishing industry. Those who do not know people from the fishing industry came from Lerwick (2 respondents), Troon (1) and Ullapool (1). As only nine respondents completed the survey in Troon and only six from Ullapool, those represent 11% and 16% of the respondents in these locations, respectively.
Only 22 respondents (10.7%), answered “no” to the question: “do you know people wo work in marine tourism activities or businesses?”. 18 of those were from Lerwick, representing 10.2% of those who completed the survey from this location. Three were from Troon, representing a third of those who completed the survey from this location. One form the Western Isles, representing 50% of those who completed the survey form this location.
Group representatives
In response to the question, “Are you here as a representative of an organization?” thirty-seven respondents answered “Yes”. Out of them, 33 respondents provided the name of the organization or group they represent.
