Sets out the approach that the Scottish Government and its agencies will take to respond to an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in wild birds in Scotland.
Glossary
Animal Disease Policy Group (ADPG): The UK wide forum where disease control policy and strategic recommendations should be presented, reviewed, discussed, challenged and agreed
Anatidae: Family of water birds including ducks, geese and swans.
Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA): An executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and also works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Who work to safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of people, the environment and the economy.
Animal and Plant Health Agency National Reference Laboratory (APHA NRL): Provides expert disease advice to control disease incursions into the UK, to advise countries globally on testing strategies and to act as a centre of excellence for disease research and diagnostic techniques.
Canidae (canids): A biological family of dog-like carnivorans, colloquially referred to as dogs
Carnivora: An order of placental mammals specialized primarily in eating flesh, whose members are formally referred to as carnivorans
Cetaceans: Order of aquatic mammals that includes whales, dolphins and porpoises.
Charadriiformes: A diverse order of small to medium-large shorebirds
Felidae (felids): The biological family of mammals in the order Carnivora colloquially referred to as cats.
Flyway: A flight path used by large numbers of birds while migrating between their breeding grounds and their overwintering grounds
Fomite: Any inanimate object that, when contaminated with or exposed to infectious agents can transfer disease to a new host
Mustelidae (mustelids): A diverse family of carnivoran mammals, including weasels, badgers, otters, polecats and martens
Pinniped: An order of carnivorous aquatic mammals such as a seal or walrus.
Suliformes: An order of aquatic birds including gannets, cormorants and shags
Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme (SMASS): The dedicated research and reporting scheme for stranded cetaceans, pinnipeds, marine turtles, and large sharks in Scotland.
Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies (SNCBs): A public body that is a statutory advisor to the UK Government and/or devolved administrations on UK wide and international nature conservation.
