10 Presentation of Data on Sex

The Scottish Government guidance on sex, gender identity and trans status was last updated in December 2024.

Since 2022, questions about sex and trans history are identical across the three surveys contributing to the SSCQ. Respondents are asked about their sex and trans history and status separately.

For sex, there are three response options: “Male”, “Female” and “Prefer not to say”. For trans history, there are two response options: “Yes” and “No”. Those who select “Yes” for the trans history question can record their trans status in a free text box.

Due to the small number of respondents reporting a trans history and status, we are currently not publishing this data.

The Office of the Chief Statistician produced a framework for coding free text responses to survey questions regarding trans identities, supported by the work of colleagues at Scotland’s Census 2022 and the National Records of Scotland. This framework can be found here. Future publications would comply with this framework if responses are high enough to be published under the Statistical Disclosure Control policy for the SSCQ.
