A set of four international case studies have been produced as part of Stage 2 of the Scottish Rural Communities Policy Review. This is the Canada case study. The others are England, Finland and Ireland.

Rural Definitions Frequently Used in Canada (Rural and Small Town Canada, Analysis Bulletin, Du Plesis et al., 2001; Index of Remoteness, Statistics Canada: Statistics Canada, 2023).

Census Rural: Communities outside centres of 1,000 or more population.

Index of Remoteness: An index measures the proximity to and size of population centres.

Non-Metro: Towns or municipalities outside the commuting zone of larger urban centres with 100,000 or more population.

Rural and Small Town: Towns or municipalities outside the commuting zone of larger urban centres with 10,000 or more population.
