Scottish Health Information Integrity Strategy

Sets out the framework for safe, coherent, evidence-based and ethical approaches to address false and misleading health information.

Scope of this Strategy

This strategy does not make recommendations for regulation of the online environment. Efforts to address the harms we may encounter online go beyond the Scottish healthcare system and the Scottish Government’s devolved powers. This has required the creation of new laws, such as the UK Online Safety Act 2023[5] and the EU Digital Services Act.[6]

False information plays an important role in sowing doubt and eroding trust across all areas of society. It is vital that in developing a response all efforts are made to maintain and build trust. Transparency, community engagement and open communication are central to this aim. Nonetheless, this strategy is only one part of the wider efforts required to address declining public trust in our institutions and government.
