Scotland’s International Goods Trade: Quarter 4 2022

When comparing the value of exports in 2022 with 2021:

  • The value of Scotland’s international goods exports increased by 23.5% (up £6.8 billion in 2022). In comparison, international goods exports from the UK increased by 19.2%.
  • When oil and gas are excluded, the value of Scotland’s international goods exports saw an increase of 20.5% (up £4.0 billion), compared to a 13.3% increase for the UK.
  • The value of Scotland’s goods exports to the EU increased by 28.6% (up £4.7 billion). When oil and gas are excluded, Scotland’s goods exports to the EU increased by 13.8% (up £1.1 billion).
  • The value of Scotland’s goods exports to non-EU countries increased by 16.8% (up £2.1 billion). When oil and gas are excluded, Scotland’s goods exports to non-EU countries increased by 25.3% (up £2.9 billion).
  • The Netherlands remained Scotland’s top destination for goods exports in 2022. Exports to the Netherlands accounted for 17% of Scotland’s total goods exports in 2022 and increased by £662 million (11.9%) from 2021.
  • When oil and gas are excluded, USA emerged as the top export destination for goods exports, and France was the second largest destination for goods exports.
  • The value of Scotland’s goods imports increased by almost half (up 46.8%, £11.6 billion). This increase was driven largely by imports of gas.
  • Total trade (imports plus exports) increased by 34.3%. The value of goods trade with EU countries rose by 36.2%, and goods trade with non-EU countries increased by 32.7%.
