FSM

Free School Meal. Only meals taken at lunchtime are included; breakfast clubs are not included.

Lunch

A lunch is defined in the Education (Scotland) Act 1980 as amended by the Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007 as any food or drink provided in the middle of the day which the education authority consider is appropriate for consumption as a meal at that time of the day.

HLS

Healthy Living Survey – the annual survey, normally collected in February each year from all publicly funded schools in Scotland, which ran from 2012 to 2024. This was the primary source of school meal uptake estimates during those years.
