Responding to Substance Use (Including Vapes and Other Nicotine Products) in Schools - equality impact assessment
Equality Impact assessment for the guidance on Responding to substance use (including vapes and other nicotine products) in schools
Recommendations and Conclusion
In conclusion, the EQIA did not identify any further actions or amendments required to the approach set out in the guidance.
The guidance already embeds proportionate, inclusive and wellbeing-focused responses that align with GIRFEC, children’s rights and equality considerations. It supports schools and education authorities to respond to substance use in a way that minimises the risk of discrimination, supports equality of opportunity and fosters positive relationships.
It was noted that evidence directly reflecting children and young people’s views on substance use in schools is limited. This will be considered through future research activity, including future cycles of the Behaviour in Scottish Schools Research.
Future iterations of this research will form the primary mechanism for monitoring the impact of the guidance, alongside ongoing engagement with stakeholders through the Scottish Advisory Group on Relationships and Behaviour and wider policy development activity.
