Proposed North Sea and West of Scotland for Monk/Anglerfish Fisheries Management Plans

The North Sea and West Coast of Scotland monk/anglerfish FMP is one of 43 UK FMPs set out in the Joint Fisheries Statement (JFS). It sets out the policies and actions to continue to maintain the relevant stock at sustainable levels providing positive socio-economic benefits to the UK.

Scope

This FMP relates to Northern Shelf anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius and Lophius budegassa, commonly known as monkfish) which consists of the anglerfish fishery in UK waters of ICES areas 4 (North Sea) and 6 (Rockall and West of Scotland). It should be noted that the ICES assessment for this biological stock also includes the Skagerrak (ICES area 3.a).

The 2020 Act requires the relevant authority or authorities to prepare and publish FMPs in accordance with the list and timetable included in the JFS.[2] The relevant authorities for this FMP are the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Scottish Government.[3] The plan has been prepared and published jointly by the relevant authorities for the purposes of the 2020 Act. As the coordinating authority, the Scottish Government has coordinated the preparation and management of this plan on behalf of the other relevant authorities.[4]
