Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) from Universities: 2022-23: Scotland

Earnings information for UK domiciled graduates from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Scotland.

Disability

Table 2 shows the median total earnings for UK-domiciled first-degree graduates from Scottish HEIs five years after graduation split by disability. It shows that graduates in 2016/17 with no known disability earned £33,900 on average in 2022/23, compared to £31,400 on average for graduates with a disability.

The lowest earnings were seen among graduates with a mental health disability categorised as non-neurodivergent (such as depression, schizophrenia or anxiety), who earned £28,400 on average. Of graduates with a known disability, the highest earnings were seen among those with a mental health disability categorised as neurodivergent (such as ASD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia), who earned on average £32,100. Graduates with no known disability earned more on average than graduates in any of the disability groupings.

Due to the data collection methods, where graduates have self-reported as having multiple disabilities, each condition will not be recorded separately. This may have an impact on graduates who have conditions that are associated with multiple disabilities or older graduates who may be more likely to have multiple disabilities.

Differences in median earnings between males and females persist across both graduates with disabilities and no known disabilities, with males having higher median earnings than females.

[1] The table presents the total earnings for those in sustained employment five years after graduation. Hours worked are not taken into account.
[2] In line with HESA’s collection policy, where it is not known whether or not a student has a disability, the student will be recorded as ‘No known disability’. Please see the Data and Methodology section for more details on these disability groupings or HESA’s website for more details: Student 2016/17 - Disability | HESA
[3] Graduates with a sex recorded as neither male nor female are not included to prevent disclosure given the small cohort size.
