Kinship Care Statistics

Statistics on children in kinship care using data from Scotland's Census 2022.

Housing

Table 8 shows the household tenure of families. For the majority of households with children in kinship care, the home was either owned or was social housing (both 44%), while the majority of children in other households (62%) were in owned homes. Children in kinship care were significantly more likely to be living in social rented homes than those in other households, and significantly less likely to be living in an owned home. The proportion living in privately rented homes or living rent free was similar in both groups.

Table 9 shows the household tenure of families by their family status (see section Sex, Age and Family Status for family status definitions). Children living in a couple family showed the largest variation between those in kinship care and those in other households. Almost three quarters (72%) of those in other households in a couple family lived in owned housing, compared with 57% of those in kinship care. Around one third of kinship care households in this group lived in social housing, compared with 15% of those in other households. Those not in a family showed a similar trend. The majority of those in other households (57%) were living in owned accommodation, with 46% of those in kinship care in this housing. 38% of those in kinship care were living in social housing, compared with 27% of those in other households. Those in a lone parent family showed the most variation in those living in privately rented accommodation or rent free, with 20% of those in other households living here compared with 11% of those in kinship care.

Table 10 shows the housing type of children. For both those in kinship care and those in other households, the most common housing type was a whole house or bungalow (73% and 79% respectively). This was followed by a flat, maisonette or apartment, with 27% of those in kinship care and 21% of those in other households living in this type of housing.
