Substance use

The percentage of pupils who are regular smokers increases between S2 and S4; is slightly higher for boys than girls; and is higher for pupils in more deprived areas.

A similar picture can be seen for the current use of e-cigarettes, except that more girls than boys are regular vapers.

7.4% of S2 and S4 pupils said they usually drank alcohol about once a week or more. The prevalence of usually drinking alcohol at least once a week is higher for S4 pupils than for S2 pupils.

Of the 7,589 S4 pupils who provided a response, less than 1 in 10 of them said they have ever taken illegal drugs, of which nearly 20% say they take currently take drugs once a week or more.  By far the most common drug taken in the last month was Cannabis, with nearly all S4 pupils who had taken drugs in the last month reporting using this in the last year.
