A fish counter network for monitoring Scottish salmon stocks

This report outlines the SG's need for data on salmon returning to rivers, and the different types of in-river fish counter that are currently available. The report identifies the locations of existing fish counters and some other sites that may be suitable for new optical or resistivity counters.

5. Requirements for a counter network

A national fish counter network for Scotland should:

  • include at least seven (ideally ten) counters on rivers with good catch records (see section 3)
  • provide a broad geographic coverage across a variety of river types and characteristics
  • include rivers that are Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) for salmon
  • use counters sited to enumerate almost all the breeding population in the monitored system
  • provide validated and quality assured counts of salmon, as distinct from other fish species
  • be a partnership between the Marine Directorate and local fishery interests.
