A fish counter network for monitoring Scottish salmon stocks

This report outlines the SG's need for data on salmon returning to rivers, and the different types of in-river fish counter that are currently available. The report identifies the locations of existing fish counters and some other sites that may be suitable for new optical or resistivity counters.


1. Glossary

GLMM: Generalised Linear Mixed Model. Statistical method used in assessing the status of salmon stocks.

ICES: International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. An intergovernmental marine science organisation, providing impartial evidence on the state and sustainable use of seas and oceans.

MFS: Marine Fund Scotland. Grant awarding mechanism to support the Scottish Government’s Blue Economy Vision

NASCO: North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation. The regional fisheries management organisation for Atlantic Salmon.

PIT: Passive Integrated Transponder. Internal passive radio frequency identification tag used to identify individual animals (wildlife or pets) via a unique code. The tag is activated and the code read using a scanner unit.

SAC: Special Area of Conservation designated under European Council Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (the Habitats Directive).
