Education Analytical Services: Privacy Notice on Looked After Children, Child Protection and Secure Units Statistics

Data we collect

The data collected and processed by the Scottish Government will be on children and young people being formally looked after by Scottish local authorities, involved in the child protection process and in secure care. The majority of the data on these children and young people is initially recorded by the local authority or by the secure units from parents/carers of children and young people when interacting with the service provision . The data is regularly maintained by the local authority responsible or secure unit responsible.

Although local authorities require and collect a lot of additional information about the children and young people it is responsible for caring for, not all of this information is shared with the Scottish Government.  For example, we will not receive contact details for parents or carers that are collected for use by the service when contacting parents.  We also do not collect the names of children or of the parents or carers.

The data that will be collected will include:

  • Personal information such as date of birth and gender.
  • Sensitive personal information such as ethnic group and religion.
  • Basic details of the service provided to the individual involved such as the type of placement, concerns identified at child protection case conferences

and secure

  • Where it is available, a Scottish Candidate Number (SCN)
  • Contact information for following up queries with data suppliers

The Scottish Government will not use any identifiable information to take any action in relation to individual children.
