Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) - site selection: draft guidelines

Guidelines describing the proposed process for identifying and selecting Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) in Scottish waters. These were drafted by our statutory nature conservation advisors, NatureScot and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).

1. Scottish Government and Scottish Green Party: draft shared policy programme

2. The Marine Scotland Directorate will lead implementation of the policy framework on behalf of Scottish Ministers / Government

3. In the context of the Scottish Blue Carbon Forum the term blue carbon refers to the carbon captured by all biological metabolic process (e.g. photosynthesis, calcification) and organic material derived from other sources (e.g. terrigenous) that is subsequently deposited and stored as either organic or inorganic carbon in marine sediments. For more information about blue carbon see the Scottish Blue Carbon Forum website.

4. For further information on the Rapa Nui Rahui MPA see the Marine Protection Atlas website.
