Designating areas of linguistic significance: Statutory guidance
Statutory guidance for local authority and relevant public authorities on the process of designating areas of linguistic significance.
Ministerial Forward
The introduction of powers for local authorities to propose the designation of Areas of Linguistic Significance, as set out in the Scottish Languages Act 2025, represents an important milestone in supporting and safeguarding the Gaelic language.
Across Scotland, this provision enables communities where Gaelic is used as a daily language to receive appropriate recognition and support to maintain and grow its use. It also offers opportunities for areas where Gaelic contributes to local heritage, culture and education to further develop and celebrate their linguistic identity.
The development of this guidance has greatly benefited from the generous contributions of individuals, organisations and communities across the sector. Throughout the formal and informal engagement undertaken, the response has been consistently positive. As a new legislative framework for Scotland, the full potential of Areas of Linguistic Significance will continue to develop, however the commitment and passion for Gaelic that I have encountered during my time as Deputy First Minister gives me confidence in a vibrant future for the language.
The Scottish Government will continue to work collaboratively with people and bodies across the sector, throughout the designation process and beyond, to ensure that this legislation supports meaningful, and lasting progress in the use and growth of Gaelic in Scotland.
I would like to give my sincere thanks to all partners, stakeholders and communities who have contributed their time, expertise and insight to shape this strategic guidance on the designation of Areas of Linguistic Significance.
