6. This was based on achieving a target number of interviews in each sub-sector (except nurse agencies) in order to give confidence intervals of +/- 3% for a finding of 5.6%. Given the small number of nurse agencies, this criterion would have required achieving an impossibly high response rate. For this sub-sector, the was set at 28, representing a response rate of 25%.

9. It is, however, apparent that some agencies do provide the Care Inspectorate with returns for a variable number of non-nurses.

11. This is not shown in Table 4.1. The 99 survey respondents from these sub-sectors have been excluded from the rest of the analysis to allow comparisons to the 2018 data to be made on a consistent basis.

12. Population headcount data supplied by Scottish Social Services Council have been rounded to 10 using statistical rounding, and therefore the total figure may differ from the sum of components.

13. Population headcount data supplied by Scottish Social Services Council have been rounded to 10 using statistical rounding. The estimated number of non-UK EU staff by sub-group has been calculated using the prevalence figure from the survey results and the population figures from the SSSC. The total figure may differ from the sum of the sub-sectors.

14. Auxiliary staff include admin, support and ancillary staff (catering, domestic, gardening). Care staff include those providing direct care and support, supervisors of these and those responsible for the development and implementation of care plans and assessment of care needs. Managers include those with responsibility for management of care and service provision in discrete service delivery areas and those responsible for overall management of care and service provision.

The total figure may differ from the sum of the sub-sectors. See also the methodology section for how the estimates of the number of staff in nurse agencies were adjusted.

16. NMC Registered nurses identified by SSSC using Job Function categories C4E (Registered Nurses) and C5G (Senior/Charge Nurses).

The estimates number of non-UK EU staff by sub-group has been calculated using the prevalence figure from the survey results and the population figures from the SSSC. The total figure may differ from the sum of the sub-sectors. The absolute figures are likely to be higher than stated because of the number of services with missing data on location.

19. There was an error in the original survey script meaning that this question was bypassed for most in-scope participants. Where participants had given permission to be recontacted, we re-approached them to ask this question both online and by telephone. The total sample size for this question is smaller than for other questions – with responses from 657 managers in total.
