What the law says at the moment

The law allows Church of Scotland leaders – called ministers and deacons – to lead marriages for couples who are opposite sex.

Opposite sex means a woman and a man.

The Registrar General for Scotland is the person who gives permission for celebrants to lead marriages.

The Scottish Government has also given permission to some organisations so that all their celebrants can lead some types of wedding.
