Children and young people's participation: practice examples

Case studies of organisations who have engaged with children and young people.

There are many practice examples available based on projects, programmes and policies in Scotland, where children and young people have participated in a meaningful way to inform decision-making and improve outcomes for themselves and others.

These examples may give you some ideas on how you could engage with children and young people in decision-making.

This document should be read in conjunction with the guide: Decision making: children and young people's participation

The following examples of children and young people’s participation in decision-making were chosen with input from a small group of young people and some members of our expert working group.  All examples have taken place since 2017.

These examples are not necessarily the ‘best’ or only examples.  But we hope that they are useful as a starting point to illustrate the different processes and approaches that can be used for children and young people’s participation in decision-making.

We have collected many more examples. If you would like to see these, please email us at ChildrensRightsandParticipation@gov.scot

We aim to review and update this information every year so that the examples are kept up-to-date.

If you have a practice example that you would like us to consider to include, please email the details to: ChildrensRightsandParticipation@gov.scot
