Breastfeeding and infant feeding: strategic framework 2025-2030

Sets out national actions on how we will support pregnant women, mother's and new parents on their infant feeding journey, continue to reduce breastfeeding inequalities and improve experiences informed by evidence of what works in Scotland.

6. Continuous Improvement, Monitoring and Governance

As part of our work to refresh the national stretch aim to take us to 2030, we will capture core requirements for the overarching governance and monitoring of infant feeding. This will align with our ambition, legal, moral and ethical duty to ensure that all babies, no matter how they are fed, receive safe and adequate nutrition and their parents are supported to provide this in line with their infant feeding choices and goals.

There is already good data available, across different levels of the system, to tell us about infant feeding in Scotland.

A measurement framework has already been established to where and how to target work to support delivery of the national stretch aim, through innovation, spread of evidence based approaches and local incorporation of Once for Scotland resources.

This work crosses many national policy areas within Government and these connections are important to set out the collective contribution to optimising early child diet and nutrition. We will continue to work with policy partners in Government and with external partners to drive improvement and share learning.

6.1. How we will monitor and measure progress and impact

Scottish Government will work with a range of partners and wider stakeholders over the next few years to develop robust quality indicators for this framework.

We will also assess our progress against the success factors set out in the Becoming Breastfeeding Friendly report.
