Breastfeeding and infant feeding: strategic framework 2025-2030

Sets out national actions on how we will support pregnant women, mother's and new parents on their infant feeding journey, continue to reduce breastfeeding inequalities and improve experiences informed by evidence of what works in Scotland.

Definition

The term ‘Infant Feeding’ includes all ways in which a baby can be fed – at the breast, expressed breastmilk, formula, mixed and complimentary feeding.

Recognising that families with babies and young children have diverse and individual circumstance we aim to support everyone covered by the Equality Act 2010, regardless of any/all protected characteristics.

In line with the National institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) Postnatal Care Guidelines, the term ‘woman’ or ‘mother’ is used throughout and is taken to include people who do not identify as women but are pregnant or have given birth. Similarly, where the term ‘parent’ is used this should be taken to include anyone who has the main responsibility or caring for a baby. This Framework aligns with this, acknowledging that some lactating people may prefer to use other terms such as ‘body-feeding’, ‘chest-feeding’ or ‘nursing’.
