Biodiversity Programme Advisory Group - sub group EH and I indicator: recommendations
The Biodiversity Programme Advisory Group (PAG) has provided expert recommendations to inform statutory nature restoration targets under Scotland’s proposed Natural Environment Bill, a key component of the strategic framework for biodiversity in Scotland.
2. Sub-group workshop
PAG members were asked to put themselves forward to join the sub-group, with a view to have membership that provided good expertise on ecosystem indicators and covered both terrestrial and marine expertise. The sub-group membership was as follows:
Prof Mathew Williams (PAG Chair and CSA ENRA)
Prof Anne Magurran (University of St Andrews)
Prof Des Thompson (Leverhulme Fellow – UHI)
Dr Phil Boulcott (Marine Directorate, SG)
Dr Rosalind Bryce (UHI)
Prof Davy McCracken (SRUC)
Prof Rob Brooker (JHI)
Dr Clive Mitchell (NatureScot)
Dr Eunice Pinn (standing in or Dr Ben James) (NatureScot)
The sub-group was also supported by colleagues at NatureScot (Dr David O’Brien) and the Scottish Government (Dr Robert McMorran and Dr Jack Bloodworth).
The sub-group were provided with a pre-workshop paper that outlined the three options put forward by the full PAG in more detail. This included an initial Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis of each option (the paper is linked in Annex 1). Over the course of an afternoon workshop on 25th October 2024 the sub-group were asked to discuss and answer the following questions:
1. Which of the conceptual indicator set options suggested by the full PAG is recommended to be taken forward?
2. For the selected option, which indicators are recommended to be used for setting targets against?
