Schools - addressing racism and racist incidents: guidance
This guidance has been designed to assist schools to develop and implement a consistent and robust approach to addressing racist incidents experienced or displayed by children and young people in school.
Annex B: Support and Resources
There are a range of resources and learning available to support staff to respond to racism and many organisations working to address racism. This section signposts to some resources and learning on racism, but the list is not exhaustive. There will also be local initiatives and learning that school leadership and staff may wish to access. Schools will also wish to ensure that they are considering the latest resources and learning.
Resources to support children and young people and parents, carers and families
- Intercultural Youth Scotland provide counselling for Black and People of Colour children and young people, aged 12-25 based in Scotland
- CRER has an advocacy and advice service for parents and carers of children and young people facing racism at school
- The NSPCC have guidance on talking to children about racism.
There may be additional supports available at local level. For example, RISE Forth Valley provides support across a number of local authorities.

- Ambitious about Autism have developed a visual story about race and racism
Resources to support schools and practitioners
Understanding racism and anti-racism
- Anti-Racist Curriculum Principles have been developed as part of the Anti-Racism in Education Programme
- Resources and support for anti-racist education practitioners across Scotland are available on antiracisted.scot, including:
- Information on using the correct language
- Resources for professional learning and classroom activities
- Understanding racial microaggressions: A series of videos features Scottish students talking about their experiences of microaggressions, produced as part of the Advanced HE project in Scotland
- Education Scotland’s Promoting Anti-Racist Education in Scotland includes information on ways children and young people in Scotland experience racism
- Education Scotland has information on anti-racist education and racial trauma
Children and young people’s mental health
- Resources on the impact on mental health are signposted on Education Scotland’s Promoting Anti-Racism in Scotland
- Educational Psychology services in each local authority can be found at Enquire
- The Anna Freud Foundation mental health resources, including guidance on supporting students who have experienced racism
- Mind have resources on Racism and mental health
Hate Crime
- There are resources for schools available from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service
- The Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) have published information on responding to online hate speech and hate crime
- Education Scotland have developed a professional learning resource on recognising and responding to hate crime.
Responding to a child or young person who has experienced a racist incident
- Education Scotland have information on creating safe spaces for pupils:

- Respect for All is the National Approach to Anti-Bullying for Scotland’s Children and Young People
- STEP has developed guidance on support for Gypsy/Traveller children and young people who experience racism
- Addressing Inclusion was developed by CRER and respectme to support school staff to address racist bullying in Scottish schools
Engaging with parents and families
Resources to support staff wellbeing
A range of resources exist that can assist with tackling racism and discrimination by and against members of staff. Not all of these are aimed specifically at the teaching workforce in Scotland but can still be useful:
The EIS has produced advice, guidance and resources for members on a range of equalities matters including anti-racism
- “Standing Together - Mobilising for Anti-Racism at work” developed in partnership with the Scottish Association of Minority Ethnic Educators (SAMEE).
- NASUWT has produced advice and resources for members on anti-racism
- The General Teaching Council for Scotland have a number of resources targeted at supporting equality and diversity including:
- Scottish Government’s Safer Scotland website includes information on support services available for anyone who has been subject to abuse of any kind
- The TUC have produced information on anti-racism in the workplace including:
- The EHRC have produced technical guidance on sexual harassment and harassment at work, which may be useful for staff facing any sort of discrimination, including race-based discrimination.
