Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how businesses work. Scotland has real strengths in AI, but co-ordinated action is needed to make the most of them.
Scotland's digital technology sector is worth £6.87 billion and growing. Investment in AI grew by 35% a year between 2020 and 2024.
But many businesses still need practical help to adopt or get more from AI.
The AI Scotland programme
We set up AI Scotland in 2026 to help businesses and organisations benefit from artificial intelligence.
The AI Scotland programme will enable the delivery of commitments in Scotland’s AI Strategy. It brings together universities, businesses, public agencies and government to support the AI sector and help more businesses use AI effectively.
What AI Scotland will do
We will run programmes to help businesses, including:
- helping smaller businesses start using AI or use it better
- supporting business leaders to make good decisions about AI
- connecting AI companies with the data they need
- backing promising AI businesses to grow
- attracting investment to the AI sector
AI Scotland will also support the responsible use of AI across public services and wider society, including areas such as health, education, jobs and skills.
AI strategy
We have published Scotland's AI Strategy 2026 to 2031. It builds on our 2022 strategy, keeping the core principles that AI should be trustworthy, ethical, and inclusive, while adding a stronger focus on economic growth.
Who is involved
AI Scotland is a partnership between The Data Lab, Scotland's enterprise agencies, universities and business organisations.
