Where we work

Our activities are focused on four development partner countries: Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, and Pakistan (for scholarships only).

These partner countries were selected following a public consultation in 2016, based on need (their ranking on the Human Development Index)  and their historical and contemporary links to Scotland.

Scotland’s relationships with both Malawi and Zambia – who both celebrate their 60th year of independence in 2024 – stretch back more than 150 years, with long-standing partnerships established between our health and education sectors.

Scotland has also been a development partner with Rwanda for more than 15 years, with strong connections established through educational institutions.

There are also strong contemporary links between Scotland and Pakistan – including our large Pakistani community in Scotland – and our scholarships programme for women and girls there has been running since 2013.
