Education Directorate

We are responsible for policy and delivery relating to Scotland's schools system. We work to improve outcomes for children and young people by aligning capability across the education system with long-term strategic needs and ministerial priorities. We bring together all functions previously delivered by the Learning Directorate and Education Reform Directorate:

  • supporting improvement across attendance
  • attainment
  • behaviour
  • relationships
  • curriculum and assessment in schools

We also lead cross-government policy on Gaelic and Scots and provide support for portfolio strategy, finance and public sector reform within the Education and Skills portfolio.

Directorate responsibilities include:

  • improving school attendance
  • improving educational attainment and reducing the poverty-related attainment gap
  • supporting positive behaviour and relationships in schools
  • curriculum and assessment policy
  • delivery of National Improvement Framework priorities
  • cross-government policy relating to Gaelic and Scots
  • education and skills portfolio strategy
  • finance and public sector reform responsibilities within the portfolio
  • stakeholder engagement across the education system
  • continuous improvement and reform of Scotland's education system
  • supporting improved outcomes for children and young people
