Director of Education
Clare Hicks has been joint Director of Education since April 2026.
Responsibilities
Education Directorate vision and mission
- the SG role in the education system is to provide leadership and work collaboratively with key partners in improving outcomes, in line with the National Improvement Framework (NIF)
- uur mission is to deliver an education system that works for children and young people
- we will measure success through the actions set out in the NIF and Improvement Plan
- we will support the delivery of ministerial priorities and support a reformed system that enables continuous improvement
- sets the current priority focus on NIF outcomes and improving attendance, attainment, behaviour and relationships, and the curriculum
Biography
Clare began her career in the UK Civil Service in 2002 in the Department for Work and Pensions.
She joined the Scottish Government in 2005. Her most recent posts include:
