Welfare of Equids: Guidance
This guidance is intended to help all those who care for equids ensure that their fundamental health and welfare needs are met. It is issued by the Scottish Ministers under section 38 of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 with a view to securing the welfare of equids.
Part 2: Daily care and management
Each section:
- includes practical guidance,
- sets out examples of good practice that all those responsible for equids should follow to ensure the needs of equids are met and to attempt to provide them with a high standard of living.
In some sections of the guidance, examples of enhanced (aspirational) management measures that could be considered as going beyond “good practice” are provided. These additional measures are provided to support those who own or care for equids and who may wish to go further to promote or enhance equid welfare and overall quality of life. They are separate from the good practice set out in this guidance and which is intended to assist those responsible for an equid in meeting the requirements of section 24 of the 2006 Act.
