UK Cetacean Conservation Strategy
Strategy to support the conservation and protection of cetaceans in UK waters, contributing to the UK’s vision for clean, healthy, safe, productive, and biologically diverse oceans and seas.
Making a positive contribution through international collaboration
The geographical ranges of most cetaceans covered by this Strategy extend beyond the UK Continental Shelf. Consequently, in parallel to our actions close to home, we must also support international efforts to promote the conservation and protection of cetaceans beyond our jurisdiction. To deliver on international obligations to protect cetaceans globally it is critical that we strengthen coordination and collaboration with our international partners. This will allow us to contribute shared knowledge of measures to manage threats and pressures acting on our cetacean species.
Collectively we are already engaging and reporting on our contributions through the OSPAR Convention, ASCOBANS, ICES and the IWC. However, through better collaboration and knowledge exchange, we can make a difference globally with efforts that contribute to, and influence, international decision-making.
