Wildfires: strategic action plan

Sets out a coordinated approach to preventing, preparing for and responding to wildfires in Scotland.

Conclusion

Wildfires are no longer rare or predictable events. They are a growing, climate‑driven threat that demands shared responsibility and strong, coordinated action. As global warming intensifies in the decades ahead, we must continue to advance all three pillars of this Action Plan to ensure that Scotland’s climate resilience keeps pace.

The experiences of recent years have demonstrated that when SFRS, land managers, public bodies, volunteers and communities work together, Scotland is immeasurably stronger and better equipped to protect lives, livelihoods and our natural environment.

This Strategic Action Plan reinforces the importance of that collective effort. Clear roles and responsibilities and robust command and control structures led by SFRS ensure that every organisation and every individual understands the part they must play and can do so safely. Effective partnership working and a collaborative approach to integrated fire management remains essential for tackling wildfires.

Every person in Scotland has a role in reducing wildfire risks. Whether through following outdoor access guidance by acting responsibly during periods of high fire danger, or supporting local resilience efforts, public behaviour is a crucial line of defence against wildfire ignition and spread.

As we look to the seasons ahead, this ever-evolving plan for delivery of continual improvement across every aspect of wildfire management, represents a call to action: for government, public services, land managers, rural businesses, community groups and individuals alike. By working together, respecting our shared responsibilities, and staying vigilant in the face of a changing climate, we can reduce the likelihood of devastating wildfires and strengthen Scotland’s resilience and preparedness for the future.
