Government response to a public consultation on reviewing Scotland’s Shellfish Water Protected Areas (SWPAs) that ran from 7 July to 29 September 2025, to designate 15 new or expanded SWPAs in Scottish waters and de-designate 29 SWPA's
5. Next Steps
We are committed to continuing to work with stakeholders to ensure SWPAs play their role in supporting shellfish growers.
The Scottish Government intends to designate 14 new and expand 1 SWPA.
Of the 29 proposed de-designations, these will continue to be designated whilst we work with stakeholders to complete a review of the criteria used to determine sites for designation and de-designation.
