Swine vesicular disease: control strategy

This document is for use in the event of an outbreak of swine vesicular disease (SVD).

Suspicion	Report of suspected SVD/ FMD made to local APHA Duty Veterinary Officer Suspected premises statutory notice (EXD01) served – likely for FMD in first instance VI investigates and submits samples to laboratory if disease cannot be ruled out FMD Temporary Control Zone of at least a 10km radius around suspect premises
Confirmation	CVO Scotland confirms SVD following laboratory results Infected premises statutory notice (EXD02) served EU Commission notified by CVO UK
Infected Premises	Valuation, culling and disposal of all pigs on infected premises Cleansing and Disinfection Controlled Restocking Lift Premises Restrictions
Area Restrictions	Protection Zone of at least a 3km radius around IP Surveillance Zone of at least a 10km radius around IP Export controls put in place.
Vaccination Strategy	No vaccine currently available
Tracing	Epidemiological investigation Forward tracing to look for spread Backward tracing to look for origin Consideration of regionalisation
Surveillance	Surveillance in PZ and SZ (including taking laboratory samples)
Country Freedom	Evidence submitted to EU seeking removal of any safeguard measures applied
Normal Business	Return to normal business Efforts made to restore third country markets continues
