Salmon farming - welfare at the time of killing: guidance

This guidance applies to Scotland only and is issued by the Scottish Ministers under section 38 of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. It relates to the welfare of farmed fish at the time of slaughter or killing.

ANNEX B – Indications of Recovery from Stunning

The most reliable and effective signs of recovery for salmon and trout are the return of the eye roll reflex (see images below) and the breathing reflex. Rhythmic movement of the operculum should be looked for, but take into account that apparently random and irregular movements can be, but not usually, a sign of recovery.
