Scottish Donation and Transplant Group written update: December 2025

Written updates from the meeting of the group held on 11 December 2025.

Paediatric transplant activity update

Update provided by:

  • Ben Reynolds, Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist

The paediatric service has completed four transplants so far in 2025. Two living related donor transplants (one pre-emptive, one deceased donor transplant and one auto-transplantation). This is our first paediatric auto-transplant in Scotland.

There are three more living related donor transplants planned for the remainder of 2025.

There are three patients actively waiting on the deceased donor waiting list.

Risks

There are UK-wide concerns regarding the lack of formal surgical training process for paediatric transplantation.

Incoming mandate that all UK paediatric units have a business contingency plan with a neighbouring unit in case of long-term sickness, lack of surgical availability or service disruptions.

Scoping exercise for possibility of centralisation of transplant services.
