Scottish Donation and Transplant Group written update: April 2025
Written updates from the meeting of the group held on 24 April 2025.
Paediatric transplant activity update
Update given by:
- Ben Reynolds, Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist
For the financial year 2024 to 2025, the paediatric service has completed:
Eight transplants since 1 April 2024 including four deceased donor transplants and four living related donor transplants.
The are currently four patients on the deceased donor waiting list and one also in the National Kidney Sharing Scheme with first run scheduled for April 2025. There are two patients on haemodialysis, one patient on home haemodialysis and three patients on peritoneal dialysis.
Risks
Surgical training in paediatric transplantation remains very ad hoc and dependent on trainees developing own interest and giving up their own time to observe/scrub in - this is a UK issue and there is a new working group to address this.
Also ongoing discussions re how paediatric transplant is delivered, particularly by smaller centres - there is likely to be a proposal coming to centralise transplantation in a handful of centres in the UK. We anticipate retaining transplant status, if nothing else because politically 'losing' transplant would be unfavourable.
Celebrations
Latest paediatric transplant featured in the media for World Kidney Day.
Publication of the Plasma-Lyte Usage and Assessment of Kidney Transplant Outcomes in children (PLUTO) study - and preparation for the LIMITS clinical trials study.
