Scottish Annual Business Statistics 2023

Data relating to the Production, Construction and Service Sectors in Scotland.


Main Sectors

In 2023, approximate Gross Value Added at basic prices (aGVA) of the non-financial business economy was estimated at £121.3 billion.

Figure 1: Between 2022 and 2023, aGVA for the non-financial business economy decreased by £3.9 billion (-3.1%), driven by a fall in primary industries which includes the oil and gas sector.

Services

In 2023, the Services sector accounted for an estimated £68.9 billion of the total non-financial business economy aGVA (56.8%). Between 2022 and 2023, aGVA for the Services sector decreased by £0.6 billion (-0.9%).

Primary Industries

In 2023, the Primary Industries sector accounted for an estimated £27.7 billion of total non-financial business economy aGVA (22.9%).

Between 2022 and 2023, aGVA for the Primary Industries sector decreased by £3.1 billion (-10.1%). The industry division contributing most to the sector decrease was Extraction of Crude Petroleum and Natural Gas (division 6) which fell by £6.7 billion between 2022 and 2023. However, there was a large increase in aGVA in Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply (division 35) (up by £3.5 billion). 

Note that data for division 6 includes off-shore oil and gas activity; off-shore activity, under UK regional accounts procedures, is normally allocated to a separate ‘Extra Regio’ category rather than allocated to a region within the UK.


Manufacturing

In 2023, the Manufacturing sector accounted for an estimated £14.9 billion of the total non-financial business economy aGVA (12.3%). Between 2022 and 2023, aGVA in the Manufacturing sector decreased by £0.4 billion (-2.7%).

Construction

In 2023, the Construction sector accounted for an estimated £9.7 billion of total non-financial business economy aGVA (8.0%). Between 2022 and 2023, aGVA in the Construction sector increased by £0.3 billion (+3.0%).
